About Einstein's Logic Grid
Einstein's Logic Grid is a short deduction puzzle in the spirit of the famous riddle. Three people each own a different pet and drink a different beverage, and a handful of clues is all you get. Use the drop-down menus to assign a pet and a drink to everyone, then press Check Answer. One consistent assignment satisfies every clue, so careful elimination is your best friend.
Tips and strategy
- Begin with any clue that names a person and an item directly. That gives you a certain fact to build on right away.
- Treat negative clues as eliminations. Knowing someone does not own or drink something removes it from their options.
- Chain the clues together. When one clue links a drink to a pet, learning the drink immediately tells you about the pet as well.
- Remember each pet and each drink is used exactly once, so as options are claimed the remaining people have fewer choices.
- Read each clue again after every deduction, because a clue that seemed vague at first can become decisive once one assignment is fixed.
What it exercises
This puzzle exercises deductive reasoning, careful reading and the discipline of eliminating possibilities one by one. Holding several constraints in mind at once and testing them against a tentative answer is the core of logical problem solving and clear, orderly thinking.
